Where each number comes from
- Baseline: United States Life Tables, 2023 — National Vital Statistics Reports vol. 74 no. 6, CDC/NCHS. Remaining years by exact age and sex, taken from Table 2 for males and Table 3 for females; values between the published ages are linearly interpolated. This is the most recent complete life table, so the baseline, the headline figures below and the by-country table all describe 2023.
- Smoking: Jha et al., New England Journal of Medicine, 2013 — 21st-century hazards of smoking and benefits of cessation in the United States. Current-smoker penalties follow that paper's age-at-cessation findings directly; the former-smoker figure is set at one third of the current-smoker penalty for the same age band, which assumes a quit several years ago.
- Physical activity: Moore et al., PLOS Medicine, 2012 — a pooled analysis of more than 650,000 adults, reporting gains from 1.8 years at very low activity to 4.5 years at the highest level, relative to no leisure-time activity.
- Body mass index: Prospective Studies Collaboration, The Lancet, 2009 — 894,576 adults across 57 studies, with an apparent optimum near BMI 22.5–25, median survival reduced by 2–4 years at BMI 30–35 and by 8–10 years at BMI 40–45.
- Re-centring: every source measures against its own reference group — never-smokers, people doing no leisure exercise, BMI 22.5–25 — while the baseline life table covers the whole population, smokers and all. Each figure above is therefore shifted so that a set of answers matching the US adult average nets to zero. The weights come from NHIS 2023 for smoking status and activity and from NHANES August 2021–August 2023 for BMI. One consequence is worth reading carefully: a row can be positive simply by being better than a national average in which 40% of adults are obese.
- Age scaling: the activity and BMI findings were measured in cohorts centred near age 40. This page scales them by the ratio of your remaining life-table years to those of a 40-year-old of your sex, never above 1. A 70-year-old therefore sees a smaller shift than a 40-year-old from the same answer, which is the direction the underlying research points, though the exact scaling is ours rather than the papers'.
This is a population average for people who answered as you did. It is not a prediction about you, and no calculator can make one.
What this life expectancy calculator actually calculates
Start with the honest version. Life expectancy is a property of populations, not of people. Statisticians take the death rate observed at every age during one year, apply the whole set to an imaginary cohort, and report how long that cohort survives on average. The result describes a group. Applied to you it is a reasonable expectation and nothing more.
What this page does is take that group figure for your age and sex, then move it by amounts that large studies have attached to three habits. Every shift is labelled with its source in the result block, so you can see which study each number came from and how large its cohort was.
Under whichever name you arrived by — a lifespan expectancy calculator, an expected lifespan calculator, a life expectancy estimator, an age expectancy calculator — the machinery is the same, and the important part is that the baseline comes from real life tables rather than from a made-up scoring system.
The vocabulary around it is unusually tangled, and one distinction is worth keeping. Demographers use life span for the biological ceiling of a species — roughly 120 years for humans, reached by a handful of documented individuals — and life expectancy for the statistical average of a population. In everyday use an expected life span means the second of those, and so does the hybrid life span expectancy that turns up in search boxes. This page reports the average, not the ceiling.
Life tables: where the baseline comes from
Life tables are among the oldest tools in statistics, and modern ones are built from every death registered in a country in a given year. The column that matters here is the expectation of remaining years at each exact age — the reason your estimate goes up as you age. Having survived to 60, you are no longer exposed to the mortality that pulled down the figure quoted at birth.

One consequence worth stating plainly: any expected age of death produced from a table like this is a moving target that improves as you hit each milestone. That is not optimism, it is arithmetic.
Average life expectancy by sex, and the American numbers
In 2023 the average life expectancy at birth in the United States was 78.4 years: 75.8 for men and 81.1 for women. Those two figures answer a remarkable number of differently worded questions. Male life expectancy, men life expectancy, average life expectancy man, average life expectancy for a man, average life expectancy for a male, average life span of a male, average life span of man, average life span for men — every one of them is asking for the same 75.8.
Narrow it to the United States specifically and the phrasing multiplies again. Average life expectancy american male, average lifespan for an american male, life expectancy for american male, life expectancy for american men: 75.8 years, as of the 2023 data. The average american life expectancy across both sexes is 78.4, and the average american lifespan quoted in most press coverage is that same combined figure.
Some people search instead for the average age of death male statistics show, or the average age of death for men — and that is genuinely a different quantity. Life expectancy at birth is hypothetical: it asks what would happen to newborns facing this year's mortality rates for their entire lives. The mean age of the men who actually died last year reflects the size of the generations born eighty years ago as much as it reflects current health. The two usually sit a few years apart.
The gap between the sexes is one of the most durable findings in demography. It appears in every country with reliable records, which rules out a purely cultural cause, but it ranges from under two years to more than ten, which rules out a purely biological one. Both are involved: oestrogen's cardiovascular protection before menopause and the redundancy of a second X chromosome on one side, and large differences in smoking, drinking, dangerous occupations and violent death on the other. As the behavioural gap has narrowed in wealthy countries, so has the survival gap.

Anyone comparing life expectancy by country should read these as national averages that conceal enormous internal variation — the difference between rich and poor districts within a single American or British city can exceed the difference between two countries several rows apart in this table.
Three things stand out when you look at life expectancy per country rather than at any individual figure. The top of the list has compressed: a dozen countries now sit within two years of each other, and further gains there are slow and expensive. The United States is the clear outlier among wealthy nations, trailing peers of similar income by five to six years, with the gap driven mostly by deaths before 65. And the largest remaining differences in age expectancy by country are still about infant mortality, infectious disease and access to basic care rather than about anything a lifestyle calculator measures. Looking at life expectancy by nation over time, the striking finding is how much of the last century's improvement came from those three things.
The three factors, and what the research actually says
Smoking
The largest and best-quantified effect on the list. The 2013 New England Journal of Medicine analysis of American cohorts found smokers lost at least a decade of life relative to people who had never smoked — and, crucially, measured the recovery from quitting by the age at which people stopped. Quit between 25 and 34 and roughly ten years came back; between 35 and 44, about nine; between 45 and 54, about six; between 55 and 64, about four. Stopping before 40 removed close to 90 percent of the excess mortality risk.
That is why this calculator applies a different penalty at 30 than at 65 rather than one flat number. The effect really is age-dependent, and pretending otherwise would misrepresent the source.
Physical activity
The 2012 PLOS Medicine pooled analysis followed more than 650,000 adults and found gains that start earlier than most people expect. Even 75 minutes a week of brisk walking — half the standard guideline — was associated with about 1.8 extra years compared with no leisure-time activity. Meeting the guideline was worth around 3.4 years, and the highest activity group about 4.5.
Notice the shape of that: the jump from nothing to a little is proportionally the biggest one on the whole curve. Going from zero to twenty minutes a day buys more than going from an hour a day to two.
Body mass index
The 2009 Lancet collaboration pooled 57 studies and 894,576 adults, and found an apparent optimum around BMI 22.5–25. Median survival fell by two to four years at a BMI of 30–35 and by eight to ten years at 40–45 — a reduction the authors compared directly with the effect of smoking.
Two honest caveats. Below about 22.5 the excess mortality the study found is substantially confounded by smoking and by illness that causes weight loss rather than the other way round, so a low-BMI penalty should be read with suspicion. And BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat, which is why the body fat calculator exists as a separate tool.
What is deliberately not in this calculator
- Family history. Asking about your parents means collecting health data about people who never agreed to it, and the predictive value of a general question is modest next to the factors already included.
- Date of birth. The output is a number of years. Your age is enough, and a birth date is identifying information with no analytical purpose here.
- Diet scoring. Nutritional epidemiology has real effects but wide uncertainty, and a points system implying that four servings of vegetables buys a specific number of years would be inventing precision that does not exist.
- Income, education and postcode. These are among the strongest predictors in the literature — the gap between the richest and poorest deciles in the United States exceeds ten years — but they are not things a fitness tool should be scoring people on.

Actuaries compute life expectancy for a population: take the death rate at every age in a given year, apply them to a hypothetical group of 100,000 newborns, and average the ages at which that group dies. What a calculator does is start from that population figure for your age and sex and shift it by the amount published research associates with a handful of habits. Treat any figure that claims to estimate life expectancy to the decimal as a description of a group, not a prediction about a person.

By building a life table. Count the deaths at each age in a year, divide by the population at that age to get a death rate, then run a hypothetical cohort through the whole set of rates and record how long it survives.
