To convert running pace between units directly, multiply a kilometre pace by 1.609 to get the mile pace, or divide by 1.609 to go the other way. Marathon pace calculator: goal time to splits
The marathon punishes bad pacing more than any other distance, because the cost of going out fast is not paid until 20 miles in. A marathon pace calculator is therefore less about the arithmetic and more about committing to a number before the adrenaline of the start line rewrites it.

Read that as a marathon race pace chart and one thing stands out: the difference between a 3:30 and a 4:00 marathon is 68 seconds per mile. It sounds enormous stated that way and trivial stated as pace, which is exactly the illusion that ruins races. Two adjustments turn the table from a marathon race pace calculator into a plan. Add roughly 10 to 20 seconds per mile of buffer for anything hilly or hot. And aim to reach half way 60 to 90 seconds slower than an even split, which sounds like giving away time and is in fact the most reliable way to keep it. The half deserves its own note, because it is paced differently rather than simply proportionally. 5K, 10K and mile pacing
Shorter races invert the problem. Nobody blows up at 20 miles in a 5K; they simply run the first kilometre far too hard and spend the rest of the race paying for 15 seconds of enthusiasm. A useful rule for a 5k race pace calculator: your target pace should feel uncomfortable by the second kilometre and barely sustainable by the fourth. The 10K sits at an awkward junction — fast enough to feel like a speed event, long enough to punish that assumption. Where pacing plans go wrong
- Course distance. GPS watches over-read on twisty courses and under-read among tall buildings. A marathon watch reading 26.5 miles usually means you ran wide, not that the course was long — the official distance is measured on the shortest legal line.
- Heat. Above roughly 15°C, expect to give up a few seconds per mile for every additional degree. That is physiology, not weakness, and no calculator accounts for it.
- Hills. Uphill costs more than downhill returns. A rolling course is slower than a flat one of the same total elevation change.
- Even splits as dogma. The mathematically optimal race is very slightly negative-split. The practically optimal one is the same thing with a margin for error built into the first third.

A four-hour marathon works out at 9:09 per mile or 5:41 per kilometre. Then subtract a few seconds per mile from the early splits, because almost nobody holds an even pace over the second half.
